Breaking: Strong quake reported in Chile

[Updated 10:07 a.m.] The 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook the ground near the region of Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, near the Chilean coast. It struck just as Chile prepared to inaugurate a new president, Sebastian Pinera.
The epicenter was about 71 miles away from Valparasio, Chile, where Pinera was to be inaugurated. Television footage showed the inauguration proceeding without a hitch.
The quake was almost 22 miles deep and centered 95 miles southwest of Santiago, according to USGS.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected” and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

7.0 quake strikes off Okinawa
- Tsunami advisory issued for Okinawa and nearby islands
- Earthquake struck at 5:31 a.m.
- It was centered about 6 miles deep and 53 miles east of Okinawa
(CNN) — A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Ryukyu Islands early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Soon after the 5:31 a.m. (3:31 p.m. Friday ET) quake, Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory, recommending that people on the Okinawa Islands evacuate from the seashore. The advisory also affected the Amami Islands and Tokara Islands.
The agency said the expected tsunami height was about 0.5 meters, or 20 inches.
The quake was centered about 6 miles (10 km) deep, about 53 miles (85 km) from Okinawa.
The quake was felt on Okinawa, with shaking that lasted about 15 seconds, said Lt. Col. Daniel King of the U.S. Pacific Command.
He told CNN that commanders in Japan and Hawaii were trying to get damage and casualty reports from U.S. military stations on Okinawa but had heard nothing in the immediate aftermath.

7.0 earthquake hits Haiti
A major earthquake struck just off the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami watch for parts of the Caribbean, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There was no immediate report of damage or injuries from the quake. However, The Associated Press reported that a hospital had collapsed.
The quake had a reported magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (16km) off the coast and about 6 miles (10 km) underground, according to the USGS.
A tsunami watch was posted for Haiti and parts of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, but historical data suggests a destructive, widespread tsunami was not a threat, the USGS reported.

Strong earthquake jolts Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 struck in Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S Geological Survey said.
The quake was recorded about 33 miles (53 km) from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, Indonesia

Major earthquake strikes Indonesia, kills 6
JAKARTA, Indonesia — Six people were killed in Indonesia after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday, officials said.
The quake was initially categorized as magnitude 7.4 before being downgraded to 7.0 by geological officials.
No details were immediately available about the deaths. At least 18 other people were injured around the capital, Jakarta, said Rustam Pakaya, a health ministry spokesman.
A tsunami watch went into effect and quickly expired, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
It struck about 2:55 p.m. (3:55 a.m. ET) and was centered 242 km (150 miles) from Jakarta, according the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was about 60 km (37.3 miles) deep.
In Tasikmalaya, a city in the Indonesian island of Java, some older buildings were damaged and people panicked in the streets because there was no electricity, according to a witness named Maya.
Tasikmalaya is about 142 km (88 miles) from the epicenter. Several homes in that city were destroyed and a building collapsed, the health ministry spokesman said.
John Aglionby, a journalist with the Financial Times, was in Jakarta during the quake.
“The whole building started to sway. People got very serious,” Aglionby told CNN. “People left the building. But there was no sign of damage here.”
About three weeks ago, a series of earthquakes — ranging in magnitude from 4.7 to 6.7 — struck off the western coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island.
At least seven people were injured and one building collapsed in Padang City in West Sumatra, officials said.
